Re: ♫ Music is good for everything ♫

Basler Biker Thanks for this - I hadn't really had the chance to look for much in the way of Dutch songs (Dutch being another language on my list somewhere after Czech), but this will be one awesome head start! As for what a sea shanty is ... perhaps that definition is to be found somewhere in defi...

Mooveez - a possible way to practice speaking?

Awhile ago I found an app called Mooveez. It's a Czech company offering language courses centered around speaking - a useful way for me to begin with a language this complicated (Czech is my target language). But the app at first didn't work - no downloads would complete (and there were a lot of dow...

Re: A grammar book walks into a bar

A palindrome walks into a bar and asks for a drink. The bartender replies "No, son!" Do you want to share what this means? Libavka tavda valdyavisveltsinvok if not here, then in a pm maybe ;-) BB Tbh I forgot I had that set - I can't see it on mobile lol. It's a phrase in my made-up langu...

Re: What's the funniest word in your target language?

For German, there's a few I love.

Knabberei, basically the munchies. I just love the sound of that word.

In terms of literal translations, though, Hubschrauber (helicopter) takes the cake - literally a flying screwdriver!

Re: Beware False Cognates

My brother always laughed heartily when he thought that he heard "there's an Igel flying". He liked the famous British ski jumper "Eddy the Igel" Probably only Germans can laugh about this. But once you have the image of a flying hedgehog in your head, you will never forget the ...

Re: Other languages ? Does it really matter.

Corinnebelle I would beg to differ that a "primitive" culture (whatever that might mean) would be expected to have a simpler language. My experience is that the older the language is, the more complex it tends to be - especially as you walk backwards through the years. Languages tend to s...

Re: Mission Creep

That became obvious to me over the course of my time at Duolingo, but it took me a good while to fully process and eventually act on it. Nice to know it has a name. Time is money, and I'm not interested in giving it to a product so determined to be inferior. Still currently hunting for better option...

Re: They introduced hearts on the web :(

It seems I dodged a bullet then. I deleted my accounts when the snakes came, but this is a new low. I also tried to open the website on my phone (just for curiosity's sake, as I don't have an account anymore) and it wouldn't load. Duo just kept singing and dancing endlessly. Not sure what was up wit...

Polygloss - A great way to practice your language

I happened across a new(ish) app on Google Play called Polygloss, which lets users take part in a language-based guessing game of sorts. These matches can be played with friends or with randomly-assigned partners. The one starting the match picks an image, and provides some clues in the target langu...

Re: Best free Duolingo alternatives? any language(s)!

MsFixer Well thank you :) Actually, all of these apps can either be used alongside or in place of Duolingo. Even YouTube has full introductory courses for different languages if you can find them :) Metalanguage would be a good companion app for Duolingo or any alternative to Duol...

Re: What does this mean?

They refer to the individual lessons; for example, yours shows that you have 3 lessons each at levels 5 and 4, one at level 3, one at level 1, and 260 that haven't yet been begun. The color is the color that they turn on Duolingo after you complete them. Close! But I think you mean skills and crown...

Re: Best free Duolingo alternatives? any language(s)!

Metalanguage doesn't teach grammar, but it's great for vocabulary. It has audio made by native speakers (no computer voices, which is one of my favorite parts about it), everything is available even offline, and it has a very wide array of languages - including many not available on Duolingo. Best o...

Re: Big changes coming to a Duolingo home screen near you!

Let me get this straight. You won't be able to find anything because there are no labels (except for general labels that don't really tell you anything). There don't seem to be any Tips and Notes and currently sentence discussions are entirely inaccessible, so you'll have no clue what you're doing w...

Re: How popular are Duolingo courses really?

I would also like to point out that it can make a pretty big difference who is learning with these courses. Younger people in particular frequently come to DL thinking to learn a language, dabble a bit, and end up losing interest, getting lost in their own lives, or something like. This would certai...

Re: Imagine Duolingo as Open Source

To be fair, someone actually did start such a project. It's called LibreLingo and it currently only offers Spanish (though I have heard that Basque is on the way). It's purely web-based and hasn't really gained a lot of traction as of yet, but it's still worth a mention, as it was nonetheless direct...
