Re: The Duolingo Welsh course is being "mothballed"

It hasn't been updated in any useful sense for a year or more. I have switched to the (paid) SaySomethingIn.com course, which is substantially better.

Re: Well, that's it for me.

@AnomalousCowherd, have a look at the Facebook Duolingo Welsh Learners group, which is very active and can be found at https://www.facebook.com/groups/welshduolingo . Richard Morse, who played a major part in writing the original Duolingo course, has migrated there and is uploading helpful resource...

Well, that's it for me.

I haven't used Duolingo for a couple of months, as the Welsh course is practically useless since it was "improved". Today's visit has confirmed that "practically useless" is now "completely useless". A couple of weeks ago, I emailed Duolingo to ask if there were any pla...

@AnomalousCowherd

Did you base your username on that very famous one on the Internet? 😄

I'm not the original AnomalousCowherd. It is a pilfered name from the dim and distant past of the internet.

Re: Mae Owen yn gwybod am y clwb. (en → cy)

Subtly different meaning. Adnabod (of which nabod is a shortening) is only ever used for people. Everything else is gwybod.

Edit to add:
Actually, adnabod applies to places as well as people. Thanks, Internet!

Re: Dych chi'n hoffi'r gŵydd a'r iâr?

I was doing a bit of half-baked research on this, and the consensus seems to be that "all feminine nouns mutate after yr , except the ones that don't". I've seen scholarly papers which use y gŵydd , and others which use yr wydd . Welsh Twitterverse seems to use both. I asked one Welsh frie...

Re: Paying for Duolingo. Would you ?

I was finally in a position to pay for Duolingo, but then they took all the meaningful grammar lessons away from the Welsh course. Consequently, it is no longer possible to use Duolingo to learn Welsh - without the guidebooks explaining the grammar (Welsh is complex!), all one is doing is learning ...

Re: different understanding in different countries?

I have some Greek friends, who I have known for about 20 years. Once, near the start of our friendship, I was invited to a barbecue one Saturday afternoon. "Starts at 2pm," I was told. So, I turn up at about a quarter past two to find that I'm the only person there, and the barbecue has no...

Re: New Learning Path

You can still access the old tree here: https://www-internal.duolingo.com/ It's better than nothing, but one has to do a bit of guesswork when applying the grammar to the "official" course. It would be a tolerable situation even if all Duolingo did was to make an announcement that the not...

Re: New Learning Path

Yes, and they are really helpful. The problem is that the units have changed in the revised tree, and don't match the original notes. The information in them is good, but it's a bit like trying to put together two jigsaw puzzles which have been mixed together, using the picture from a third puzzle a...

Re: New Learning Path

But didn’t you lose all your progress by resetting? Yes. I'm not interested in keeping score - although I know that this is a huge encouragement for many learners - just in learning the language. I reset my tree because I wanted to start again from the beginning to consolidate my knowledge. The pro...

Re: New Learning Path

I reset my learning path and got it. The course notes are not available (at least they aren't to me), which has made it useless for me. Other than that, I think the learning path is fine.

Re: What has happened to the course notes?

Ah. It seems that this wasn't communicated very well in the Welsh course. The "guidebook" option has simply disappeared. I can't help but feel that this was badly done: it would have been a better user experience either for the Welsh course to remain on the old path, or a "guidebook c...

Re: What has happened to the course notes?

I reset my Welsh tree and got the new one-path course, but I don't see any option for viewing the tips at all. I'm on Unit 6 now, and haven't seen a single button to press anywhere to show me the grammar for the unit. Thanks for the Duome link - this is very helpful, but I don't know what - if anyth...

What has happened to the course notes?

I've just reset my Welsh tree in order to do a full language review before polishing off the last few modules. I have noticed that there is now no option to review course notes for each individual unit on the web version. I'm just presented with the test questions, with no notes option. Is this the ...

Re: New voices!

Ok, I spent more time than usual on today's practice, and the male voice is starting to grow on me. The female voice was clear from the outset. Both voices are a definite improvement on the artificial voice, and it is good to hear proper pronunciation. Thanks to this I have already corrected one of ...

I hate to say it, but I find the new male voice almost impossible to hear. I suppose it is a matter of retuning my ear to pick up the nuances of a new voice, but today's practice session was challenging.

I find the dialects helpful and they don't give me a real problem, but I think it would be useful if it were indicated more clearly. So, for example, learning cacen and teisen in the same lesson, but being advised that the former is more common in the South and the latter in the North. I don't know ...

Ok ,so a chance phone call with another Welsh friend this evening has clarified things a bit. He is from Pembroke, so his opinion might not be applicable to the whole of Wales. Thank you, that is a really comprehensive and useful answer!

So is there a way of explicitly specifying, for example, "last Tuesday evening" as opposed to "last Tuesday night", or would it be something deduced from context?

Re: Nos and Noswaith

Ooookay, so "noswaith dda" is translated as a unit, rather than being composed of smaller units which may be employed elsewhere? That would make sense, and there are plenty of other similar examples. I haven't seen any of my Welsh friends yet to ask them, but I hope to get a definitive ans...

From the old Welsh forum, posted on 17th March 2022: The free pdf files of the current course books mentioned by rmcode are here - https://dysgucymraeg.cymru/dysgu/cwricwlwm-a-chwrslyfrau/ Printed copies are available for, I think, £10 each - but check that you are ordering the very latest versions....

Nos and Noswaith

Something that has come up since the update. The sentence "I had a good salad for supper last Tuesday evening" ...can be correctly translated as "Ces i salad da i swper nos Fawrth diwetha" ...but "Ces i salad da i swper noswaith Fawrth diwetha" is marked as incorrect. A...

Latest Welsh course update

Hello, new forum, and new forum friends. I noticed that the Welsh course had an update a few days ago. I've just started going through to refresh all of my skills - I see lots of blue dots, and there are several skills which have been completely reset. I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts abou...
