Re: Why is ‘van’ used in: Ez nem görögül van!

Concerning the second reply, first of all, adverbs in general do not fall into the list of exceptions where “van” is used, according to the website I was looking at. Only “adverbial participles” ending with va/ve are mentioned, not adverbs. Thanks for helping out, Hungarians, but I‘m still puzzled....

Re: Why is ‘van’ used in: Ez nem görögül van!

Because "görögül" is an adverb. (This is not the Greek way)

How about “undok”
Does that mean “sullen”? Or someone who seems unfriendly, disinterested?

"undok" is stronger, more "disgusting" or "loathsome".

English has "eros" - sexual love and "agape" - brotherly love.

Re: Hungarian plurals

No rule - but patterns. The more words you get familiar with the more you get to "guess" how a word goes. However, good dictionaries will give you the major forms eg kéz, kezet, kezek, keze (nominative, accusative, plural, possessive) or méh, méhet, méhek, méhe. You can get the same for ve...

Shows how useless DL lists are. Many words are repeated - and many more are just different forms of the same word.

If you use "te" you have to use "szállod ki"

I think you wanted to say "szállsz ki" , not "szállod ki"

Igen. Bad week.

f you use "te" you have to use "szállod ki"

why is that? (and how is it related to amelyikre/amire)

The pronoun has to match the verb inflection - independent of amelyikre/amire

Re: A hülye kutya oda ugrik, ahol autók és villamosok haladnak. (en → hu)

"oda" has to take focus. "autók és villamosok haladnak" is neutral. "haladnak autók és villamosok" is not.

Abból a házból is taking the focus so the verb splits. But amelyik does not take focus.

Re: kínálni -val/-vel engem vs. (fel)ajánlani -t neki

There is a fair bit of overlap but the primary meaning of ajánl is to recommend or suggest. This can then mean offer for sale. While kínál is primarily to offer something physical - a coffee, a seat, food BUT can also mean to offer for sale or put something up for sale. Wrt case, this is why you nee...

tekint valaminak - consider AS something/regard as something. So literally, "You consider ? as your brother." With a missing direct object you usually assume second person.

Re: postpositions + demonstrative pronouns
